Max Roach

Max Roach (1924-2007) was an American drummer and composer, one of the most influential figures in the development of modern jazz. With innovative technique and a rhythmic approach that defied convention, Roach was a pioneer in the evolution of jazz and bebop.

Throughout his career, Roach worked with some of the most important musicians in jazz, including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. His collaboration with trumpeter Clifford Brown in the 1950s is considered one of the most significant in jazz history.

Roach was also an innovator on the drums, using his instrument not only to set the beat, but to create complex rhythmic textures and layers. In addition, he addressed social and political themes in his music, such as on his album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite (1960). His legacy as one of jazz's greatest drummers remains an inspiration to musicians around the world.
