Art Blakey
Art Blakey (1919-1990) was an American drummer and bandleader, widely regarded as one of the greatest innovators in jazz, especially in the realm of hard bop. Throughout his career, he was known for his unstoppable energy, powerful style, and ability to form and lead some of the most influential bands in jazz.
Blakey founded the Jazz Messengers in the late 1940s, a band that became a crucial platform for young talents such as Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and many others. His rhythmic approach, which combined a pulsating groove with a strong sense of structure, became a hallmark of hard bop.
Spanning more than 50 years, Blakey left an indelible mark on jazz, mentoring and fostering the development of many key musicians in the genre. His legacy lives on in the energy and creativity he brought to the world of jazz.
